Where and how to store data on-line? - Multidisciplinary

Open Science Framework (OSF)

  • Field(s) Multidisciplinary
  • Website https://osf.io/
  • Carrier institution Center for Open Science (COS)
  • Link to publications

    Possible but not mandatory

  • Certification GuideStar Seals of Transparency
  • Perennial ID DOI
  • License

License chosen by the depositor from a given list including, among others, CC-BY for general data, and some licenses adapted for source codes, but the user can choose any existing license by depositing an identifying text file.

  • Possibility of embargo

    No

  • Other access options Deposited data is confidential by default. It can only be made public by the depositor or another administrator who has been given rights by the depositor.
  • Metadata standard

    No metadata standards required.
OSF recommends the most commonly used metadata standards in the deposited data domain (by specifying resources made available by the Data Curation Center to find metadata standards by discipline).
If there is no standard for the discipline, OSF recommends using generic standards such as Dublin Core or DataCite.

  • Versioning Oui
  • Type of data

    No restriction on data types.

  • Related Services

Individual or group research project management tools.
OSF can be synchronized with other storage platforms such as Google Drive, Dataverse, Mendeley, etc.
These links can be used to automatically create storage folders in another chosen storage platform that match those created in OSF. Synchronization allows for more or less actions depending on permissions given to OSF by the second platform.

  • Volume Total volume unlimited. Single files max. 5 GB.
  • Cost Free
  • Comments

A webinar explaining how the platform works is available here.

Files over 5GB must be stored using an add-on. See here. (Storage part, “What is the individual file size limit?”).

OSF tries to make all deposited files available for visualization. When this is not possible due to the format, the platform tries to develop solutions.
